Spotlight on your wedding- 3 Important Tips on Lighting and Decor

Spotlight on your wedding- 3 Important Tips on Lighting and Decor

Nov 1, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

Gaurav Gupta (Founder- I Don’t Say Cheese) on what every bride and groom should know before choosing decor and lighting for their wedding.

You’ve already hired the best wedding photographer you can afford to have memories you can hold on to. But whether it’s a professional photographer or your friends with phone cameras, a little focus on light and décor will ensure every picture taken at your wedding is absolutely beautiful.

It’s all about the light!

The word photography comes from the Greek word ‘graphé’ meaning drawing and ‘photos’ meaning light; literally put together, ‘drawing with light’. An adequate light which is neither too bright nor too dull and not too harsh or too diffused is paramount for the perfect picture.

A photographer can play with apertures and decide how to use light to maximize the impact of a photograph but no matter how advanced cameras and post-production software is today, nothing can save a picture shot in a terrible light.

Too often couples and planners make the mistake of only concerning themselves with décor themes, colors or larger elements, leaving the lighting to the decorator. While we know there are zillion things to juggle while planning a wedding, we’re convinced you should be convinced about just how important a decision the lighting is and how it is necessary to be personally involved in the planning of it.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that you may forget what was on the menu at your wedding in a few years, but the photographs will be with you forever.

I urge you, please read on.

Red Green Blues

Photographers and their cameras are not fans of blue/purple/red light. Why? Well, digital cameras have a sensor that splits light into three channels: red, blue and green. The relative luminosity/ intensity of these colors are then stored digitally.

If any of these intense primary colors dominate a subject, no information is recorded in the other channels. At the processing stage, this is an editing nightmare! Even worse, if only half the subject is lit in any of these colors and the other half in different light, an ugly patch will show on the skin. All the money you invested in make-up, that beautiful wedding dress and the décor goes down the drain!

The only way to salvage such images is by converting them to black & white. But you wouldn’t want all the wedding photos in monochrome when the wedding was so colorful. Would you?

spotlight_01

Tip #1: Please avoid using the LED lights to give color to your decor and light the main area.

Old is Gold

The clichéd phrase here makes both literal and technical sense. Science will tell you how different elements result in light that has only a certain portion of the full spectrum. The golden warm yellow light of good old incandescent tungsten filament bulbs/small rice lights is the best. Even fluorescent yellow tube lights or power-saving CFLs don’t come close (unless you use colour-balanced ones). The incandescent tungsten filament mimics sunlight and produces a wide enough spectrum of light allows the camera to record images well.

It is also a scientific fact that warm yellow light works to elevate our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Imagine which feels more welcoming: a hall lit entirely by candles or a hall full of white/bluish fluorescent tube lights? Imagine which feels happier and more welcoming: a hall full of candles or a hall lit by white/bluish fluorescent tube lights?

Having said that, the recommendation here is to use as much real light as you can. Frills of tiny rice lights create mood, a larger trail of small bulbs will illuminate dark spaces and bigger lights can light up larger areas.

But what if you have a colored theme for your wedding? I say, use fabrics, flowers, and a bit of colored light tastefully to achieve the theme you have in mind. It will make your wedding planners and decorators work harder, yes. But, aren’t you investing money so you can remember it this way? And, photos are what you will remember this after 25 years. We, the wedding photographers will ensure that you get the best possible images.

spotlight_02

Tip #2: Make use of warm incandescent light.

Beauty is in Simplicity

I love the exquisite magic florists and decorators are capable of. My suggestion as a wedding photographer is to keep the stage background or the mandaps as simple as possible. More often than not, the stage is reasonably small and a busy backdrop full of patterns and flowers is not easy to blur out and separate the couple from the distractions in the frame. It compromises the quality of the overall composition; imagine how weird it is if it looks like a bunch of flowers is sticking out of your hair in most of the photos or a wooden filler on stage is just behind you in every single picture.

Pay attention to the contrast of colors between your wedding dress and the backdrop. If they’re nearly the same shade or color the photos will not be as great as you expected them to be. The photographer is already on hand for the perfect composition and moment the shutter clicks. Prominent colors, contrast, separation of the subject from the background and lighting make a photo pleasing to the eye.

Tip #3: Keep the stage backdrop simple. A good distance behind you makes sure the stage backdrop color doesn’t blend with your wedding attire.

Samah and Anuj’s Platinum Day of Love

Samah and Anuj’s Platinum Day of Love

Oct 31, 2016Love Actually, Precious Platinum

Our initiative ‘Love Actually’ is a photo series featuring couples who actively seek ideas and inspiration from WeddingSutra. The series celebrates beautiful people as they start their lives together: because real love is timeless.

Samah and Anuj’s years as acquaintances developed into a friendship that blossomed into love. “We’ve known each other since kindergarten,” Samah says, “But we never really spoke to each other in our ten years in school together.” It was only in college when seeing a familiar face in a sea of strangers brought them together for comfort. Samah had always thought Anuj was a ‘bit funny’ in school but, “Suddenly, I saw this 6 feet tall, handsome bearded guy and was so relieved to see a familiar face in Degree College.”

As their friendship grew, Anuj decided to ask her out and Samah was not surprised, “I just knew! He’d flirt with me all the time.” But just as they began their courtship, Anuj moved to the UK for further studies. Samah decided to look for the silver lining, “It was a difficult time but it put a lot of things into perspective. I had time to focus on my book and career while he studied.” And there was another treat in store for them, “The prospect of spending quality time with your loved one while abroad is just unique and can be a beautiful thing for people who are young and in love.”

The couple was back together when Anuj returned and Samah remembers the day he proposed, “We were attending a friend’s wedding in Jaipur and he took me to lunch to Nahargarh Fort, with its 360-degree view of the city. I was eagerly waiting for him to propose but he didn’t. Then something weird happened. A guy asked us to take his picture. When we did, he offered to take ours as well. But then he followed us all over and that was so creepy.” Hilariously, Anuj then had to reassure Samah by reminding her that she wanted a professional photographer to capture the moment he proposed and their stalker was exactly that. Anuj then went down on one knee and proposed.

The wedding is just around the corner and the couple is busy organizing the interiors of the apartment they will live in along with the weddingpreparations. Samah is chief of design and organization, Anuj is the executive.

Their pre-wedding shoot on the beautiful, extensive lawns at the Taj Lands End, Bandra was a chance to spend some time together, surrounded by tall coconut trees, a gorgeous pool and natural light that perfectly enhanced their all white ensembles.

As the sun set, the sound of the waves lashing the shore seemed to drum up the welling emotion between the two. Samah touched her platinum band as she talked about how she always wanted one, “It just personifies simplicity, elegance, and timelessness – just like our love.”

The loved-up couple was wrapping up the shoot when an onlooker walked up to them to congratulate them, thinking it was their wedding day. They beamed as Samah said, “We are so happy right now! Priyanka and Arihant’s Miniature Theme Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Priyanka and Arihant’s Miniature Theme Pre-Wedding Photoshoot

Oct 26, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

This lovely couple’s love for fantasy and adventure inspired their miniature-themed photo-shoot with Coolbluez Photography.

How we met

Priyanka and Arihant met in an MBA class they took together. Gradually, their casual chats and academic conversations evolved into something special. They realized quite early on that this was love, but there were familial pressures that they had to overcome. “Arihant belongs to a Jain family from Jaipur and I’m a Punjabi from Delhi. There were a lot of ups and down and disagreements but it ended on a happy note, just like a Bollywood movie,” Priyanka says with a smile.

Miniature Theme Pre-Wedding

And just to make sure, Arihant proposed to Priyanka twice! “He asked me to marry him on my birthday and I thought that was very special. But I certainly didn’t know that while I was away, he’d made special arrangements at home and invited all my close friends and family. When I entered y house, there was a dhol and a band waiting and then he proposed to me in typical ‘Bollywood style’ in front of my parents,” Priyanka says delightedly. Of course, she said ‘Yes!’

The Pre Wedding Shoot

“We wanted to do something different, not typically romantic,” Priyanka says, of their pre-wedding shoot. At one of their brainstorming sessions they came up with the idea for a miniature-themed shoot, “We thought, it would look great in pictures. We conceptualized our ideas with our photographer and were really happy with the results.”

The couple were in capable hands. CoolBluez Photography is renowned for their dreamy, unique photographs and came highly recommended by the couple’s friends. But they had no idea just how much fun they were going to have. “It was hilarious to pose with imaginary things for the shot to be executed. We had no idea how it would end up, but we just posed and had so much fun! The CoolBluez team handled it all very well. We were just mesmerized by their approach and it all felt like a fairytale,” Priyanka remembers.

The key was in the photographer-couple connection, Priyanka says, “Surpreet was great to work with. She truly understood what we wanted and honestly, the pictures were so stunning, even we were surprised at the final result!”

Priyanka and Arihant will tie the knot in October this year and are looking forward to putting their ups and downs behind them and finally being together forever. For this fun-loving couple, the idea of being stressed through formal wedding functions was also a no-no so, “We’re having a destination wedding in Goa,” Priyanka tells us, “We wanted our friends and family to just have fun and enjoy the wedding and Goa seemed like the perfect place to do it.”

Harshada and Amey’s pre-wedding photoshoot in Mumbai

Harshada and Amey’s pre-wedding photoshoot in Mumbai

Oct 25, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

Harshada is an IT professional with Deloitte, and Amey is a supply chain professional with Reliance. Their pre-wedding photoshoot in Mumbai proved a welcome and fun break from their hectic lives, and they share their story and experience here.

How we met

Cupid strikes in the unlikeliest of places, and for Harshada, it was on a matrimonial site as she met Amey there. She shares, “It is rightly said when you are supposed to meet your special someone, the world conspires to make it happen. I had just returned from Bangalore and was trying to settle in Mumbai. It was during this time that my parents were convincing me to get married and they decided to create my profile on a matrimonial site called ‘Anuroop’. I was really shocked when I heard about it, but then I shyly checked the website to see Amey’s request on my profile. I don’t know, but something just clicked at that moment and after our initial chats, we decided to meet for lunch without telling our families. It was a casual meeting but we spoke a lot about our families, friends, hobbies, work and even our past relationships!.”

There wasn’t one particular day that they realized they had fallen in love with each other. For Harshada, the relationship with Amey deepened gradually. “Our love developed slowly. I guess it was around the time when I had to go to Orissa for work and couldn’t meet him for months. I still remember crying when I saw him at the airport. That was the moment I knew that I loved him.”

Harshada and Amey

The Pre-Wedding shoot

Harshada and Amey’s pre-wedding shoot took place at various locations in Mumbai such as Dadar Flower Market, the Gateway of India, Asiatic Library, Sagar Upvan and Kala Ghoda. This collection of landmarks was a nice mix of arty and iconic sites in the city that never sleeps.

Harshada and Amey

Harshada says the pre-wedding shoot was a welcome surprise and helped Amey and her take some time off from their busy schedules and spend quality time together. She recounts, “It was an outstanding experience wherein we captured special moments thanks to a professional – Stuti Sakhalkar of The Cheesecake Project, and we can’t thank WeddingSutra enough for this experience. We loved Stuti’s work at our friend’s wedding and really wanted to do our photoshoot with her. She was enthusiastic and a very good observer, so the whole shoot felt very natural.”

Stuti discussed her ideas, color combinations, props, plans and themes for the shoot in detail with the couple. “Stuti took note of our considerations and gave our ideas a fresh spin with her experience and creativity which made this pre-wedding shoot a really fun experience,” adds Harshada.

The photos have raw authentic backdrops that exude the essence of Mumbai – be it the imposing structure of the Gateway of India, the vibrant marigold blooms of the Dadar flower market or the mesmerizing steps of historical building that encapsulate their own stories over the decades.

The couple is getting married next year and cannot wait to spend the rest of their lives together. As the happy bride-to-be says, “Amey is a very organized person while I am a little more fun-loving and emotional. We complement each other beautifully. I guess, such differences are needed to enjoy a truly happy and healthy married life”, she smiles.

We agree with it and wish them all the love and luck in the future.

Marvellous ‘Mandaps’ from destination Weddings in Oman

Marvellous ‘Mandaps’ from destination Weddings in Oman

Oct 20, 2016Destination Weddings

Want inspiration for your ‘mandap’? Check out these creative setups that were highlighted at lavish Indian weddings held in the beautiful Sultanate of Oman.

Grand Glow

The glitzy wedding of Sasha Rawal, sister of Bollywood’s leading fashion designer Kunal Rawal with Samarth Bajaj, a scion of a prominent business family from Hyderabad, was a grand affair at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa in Muscat, Oman.

The glint of glass chandelier lamps and the timeless beauty of fresh blooms emerged dramatically in this stunning arched ‘mandap’. Created against a backdrop of Oman’s coves at the resort’s Turtle Beach, this elegant setup exuded an airy and breezy feel even as the glow of the lamps cast a magical spell in the evening.

Aqua Elegance

Aditi and Jash wanted a ‘wedding with a difference’ and that’s exactly they got at the popular Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa in Muscat, Oman. The resort’s three different hotels were grand enough to accommodate all the people, parties and performances that make up a modern Indian wedding today.

Their ‘mandap’ was a minimalist yet elegant one with aqua drapes on the corner pillars of a white wooden frame fringed with dainty yellow daisies and green foliage. This setup was brightened with splashes of yellow fabric and bows fixed behind every chair facing the ‘mandap’, and looked stunning against the crystal-clear blue waters of the Sea of Oman, rocky formations rising out of the sea and a crimson sky at sunset.

Charming Circle

Nazuk and Vaibhav got married at the Al Bustan Palace – a Ritz-Carlton resort, which overlooks the blue waters of the Gulf of Oman. This palatial venue includes the largest ballroom in Oman, making it perfect for large-scale weddings. The beautifully manicured gardens framed by the stark, imposing Hajar mountains make for a dramatic setting. The ‘sehra bandi’ ceremony of this lavish setting was held in the majestic 38-metre-high domed atrium lobby of the hotel, and the ‘baraat’ left grooving to a mix of Punjabi, EDM & Bollywood tracks as they made their way to the ‘pheras’ venue against the backdrop of the mountains.

The circular ‘mandap’ was open from the top and fringed with red rose garlands strung all around the frame. The pillars were draped in lustrous white fabric giving the effect of curtains. A glowing chandelier was suspended from the centre of the ‘mandap’ and the whole setup looked beautiful in the deepening twilight, especially when reflected in the waters of the pool.

Deluxe Domes

Smit Virani tied the knot with Chandni Amin at Oman’s Shangri-La Barr Al-Jissah Resort and Spa. So lavish was this wedding that Shangri-La even renamed this luxe property to ‘The Virani Castle’ for the duration of the event which saw over 1,000 guests attend from all over the world. The entire ambience and theme of the wedding included traditional Indian wedding hues of red and gold.

The ‘mandap’ comprised a palatial dome with two mini domes flanking it atop a dais. Featuring beautiful carvings, it overlooked the resort’s Turtle Beach and featured elephant carvings, beautiful friezes and garlands of flowers on the pillars.

CINEMATIC FLAIR – Nivetha and Partheepan’s Pre-wedding Film

CINEMATIC FLAIR – Nivetha and Partheepan’s Pre-wedding Film

Oct 20, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

Beautiful locations, stunning outfits and a rocking melody are highlights of Partheepan and Nivetha’s wedding video

We’ve all enjoyed filmy song sequences that are so much a part of Indian cinema – from the splendid locations, costumes changes, rhythmic beats to a gorgeous starring couple… that was the same vibe in ‘Heart’s Desire’ – the slick pre-wedding video of charismatic couple Partheepan and Nivetha.

From the opening shots of a leather clad bride-to-be greeting her biker fiance in a verdant countryside to sashaying through fields of lavender hand in hand to the beat of a lovely song, this video by UK-based Photon Image takes pre-wedding video creativity – and dramatic drone shots – up another notch.

Shot in Italy, UK and Norway, the video features the couple in multiple looks similar to those of music videos and film song sequences. From black leather gear to a white gown and dreamy ethnic saree, Nivetha looks every inch a star in every getup, as does the handsome groom-to-be in his macho biker ensemble, lavender tuxedo and traditional attire.

The video is a blend of static shots interspersed with dynamic footage, and its true strength lies in the skillful editing which juxtaposes every mood and beat beautifully.
