Udaipur’s Taj Lake Palace played a royal role in Shweta and Sagar’s stunning Engagement shoot

Udaipur’s Taj Lake Palace played a royal role in Shweta and Sagar’s stunning Engagement shoot

New York-based Sagar and Shweta met at a common friend’s wedding. She was the bridesmaid and he was a groomsmen. Sagar, a finance professional, and Shweta, a pharmacist, ended up sitting on the same bench near the Hudson river after the reception. “We chatted for hours – and the rest was history!” recalls Shweta. “But there is a back story to our romance – Sagar and I first met as kids at a candy convention as both our dads work in that industry. When Sagar who was 11 years old then saw me he told his friend ‘That girl is cute!’ And years later, we were engaged.”

The couple decided to travel to India for their engagement photo shoot. They picked the City of Lakes – Udaipur – in Rajasthan, and Shweta shares the reason why.

“I had visited Udaipur on a family vacation a few years ago. I really love photography and I couldn’t stop taking photos of the beauty Rajasthan had to offer. Fast forward years later, Sagar and I were planning on travelling to India before the wedding. We had been brainstorming ideas for an engagement shoot but could not decide on the location. However, when I saw some old holiday photos from Udaipur, it was like a lightbulb went off in my head! I quickly researched Udaipur and Taj Lake Palace popped up. Once I saw a few photos of this stunning hotel, I knew it was the perfect location for our engagement photo shoot. The next big thing to fix was zeroing in on an awesome photography team – and we chose DotDusk because we loved their work which we saw online.”

Shweta was right in her instincts when it came to choosing Taj Lake Palace for her engagement photoshoot as it has been voted as one of the most romantic hotels in the world. A stunning structure with a white marble exterior situated in Lake Pichola in Udaipur, it was originally designed as a winter palace by Maharana Jagat Singh II between 1743 and it was originally called Jag or Jan Niwas after its founder. Shweta had to request special permission from the hotel management to do the shoot on their premises.

“It was a bit tricky, but they managed to work it out so we were able to use the morning for the photo and video shoot. The biggest challenge for us was to get the shoot done in one day as we were on a very tight schedule,” says Shweta.

Every aspect of the hotel – be it the view or the décor details – was beautiful and the couple say that shooting at this historic property was a dream come true. The couple hope to repeat their amazing experience and are planning to have DotDusk shoot their family portraits in the same location in the future.

Decoding Bridal Make-up & Hair Trends The Biguine Way!

Decoding Bridal Make-up & Hair Trends The Biguine Way!

Aug 3, 2016Bridal Fashion and Beauty

From gold lids to bold lips, Abhilasha Singh, Style Director of Biguine Make-up, decodes what’s trending in beauty and hair for discerning brides and bridesmaids.

The Bridal Look

Most Indian brides prefer bold eyes. At Biguine Make-up, we like adding the right amount of shimmer to to a bride’s eyes to make them pop. A gold smokey eye is a great alternative to the classic smokey eye. That pop of gold can be placed on the inner lid, center lid or even in the inner corner of the bride’s eye and used as a liner underneath. The shimmer adds a pretty sparkle and can be bold but subtle at the same time. Variations like rose gold, copper or bronze can be used too for a bold smokey eye bridal look. A srong lip color can be paired with this look which is perfect for evening events.

The Bridesmaid Look

Bridesmaids these days have been experimenting not only with make-up but also with hair. Smokey eyes with a hint of color paired with simple out curls and floral accessories are very hot right now. A flirty yet subtle look with nude or peachy eye shadows and a simple or winged eyeliner over the lashes brightens up the eyes noticeably. At Biguine Make-up, we like keeping the bridesmaid’s skin looking natural, and add just a hint of illumination for a glossy finish. For freshness, a touch of blush always does the trick.

jean-claude biguine india

For Brides or Bridesmaids

A simple winged eye with bold lips makes for a pretty and impactful style statement. Also the classic high bun and winged liner has been an all-time favorite for both Indian and western brides and bridesmaids alike. Even if you’re a traditional bride or bridesmaid opting for a traditional look, a bold, dramatic eye will help bring definition in photos and add a touch of sultriness to your overall look. At Biguine Make-up, we suggest a smokey eye or dramatic winged-out eyeliner paired with dramatic fake lashes and lip shades ranging from coral to matte reds based on the outfits.

Love Actually- Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal’s Day of Love

Love Actually- Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal’s Day of Love

Aug 3, 2016Love Actually

Our initiative ‘Love Actually’ is a photo series featuring couples who actively seek ideas and inspiration from WeddingSutra. The series celebrates beautiful people in love as they start their lives together: because real love can only begin, never end.

What started off as an interaction between office colleagues culminated in marriage for Arvin Mondal and Prakriti Sachdev. Arvin, a management consultant with Ernst and Young, met Prakriti at their place of work when they were both working for a management consultancy firm back in 2010. Arvin recalls that working on a project together brought them closer, and in the pre-whatsapp days, they communicated with each other through SMS after work hours. He says, “It was nothing special then, just telling each other our routines after we got home, what was made for dinner, stuff like that. That led to late night chats on the phone and gradually our feelings for each other deepened. But I didn’t have the guts to tell her how I felt. Luckily for me, she opened up first.”

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Arvin, a Bengali from Kolkata, and Prakriti, a Sikh from Delhi, started dating from May that year, but kept it under wraps. Then Prakriti enrolled for a management programme at ISB in Mohali, and Arvin had a job that took him to Mumbai, then Bhopal and Jaipur. He would take time out to travel to be with Prakriti whenever possible. He says, “Sometimes I would take a flight to Delhi, then a train to Chandigarh and then drive down to Mohali to meet her. Once, on my birthday I decided to surprise her and showed up without letting her know. I took her friend’s id card and went to the campus, then her friends let me into her room and when she entered, I was hiding. Then I stood right behind her and she did not know. I followed her around her room in this manner and she went up to the fridge and drank some water. Her friends were giggling by now and when she asked them why they were laughing, they didn’t say anything. Then she turned around and saw me and was really surprised. She gave me a huge hug because she was so happy to see me.”

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

The couple was to tie the knot in December 2015, but due to some reason they had to postpone it to April 30th of this year. In fact, when they were in Pune in November 2015 for a friend’s wedding, Arvin formally proposed to Prakriti though they were already engaged. He says, “She told me she would propose if I didn’t and I asked her to wait and not deny me this privilege. So, when I got her alone for a bit during the wedding, I went down on one knee, made an impromptu speech and asked her to marry me.”

It is gestures like these that kept their relationship going even when they were in different cities. But when both their parents started pressurising them to get married, they revealed the truth to them. There were reservations on both sides, since they belonged to different cultures; but Arvin and Prakriti convinced their parents. Also, Arvin says that the couple had already decided that any difference of opinion that might come up from either side would be resolved without anger. He says, “In all these years, we may have argued only two or three times. We were very clear that we would always keep our communication open and not let ego issues come in the way. Plus, I was marrying the love of my life, I wasn’t going to let these things stand in the way.”

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Which is why, when Arvin’s father insisted that the marriage happen in a traditional Bengali manner, everyone agreed. The wedding was in Kolkata and all of Prakriti’s family and friends turned up. A common element that helped the families bond was the fact that both sides loved music and dance. So, the sangeet, which was held a day before the marriage, had everyone dancing and singing and bonding well. Three of Arvin’s Sikh friends were also present and they helped in making Prakriti’s family understand the rituals and what was happening the next day at the wedding ceremony.

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Prakriti Sachdev and Arvin Mondal

Also, since both communities are known for their love of food, Arvin ensured that the food at the wedding had a mix of Bengali and Punjabi cuisines with ample desserts. Needless to say, the bride’s family, loved the food that was made for them; including the Bengali dishes.

Prakriti, who used to work with Flipkart in Bangalore, gave up her job when she moved to Gurgaon with Arvin and is currently between jobs. But, the bond they share, and the decision to always communicate and not remain angry is a good tip to keep in mind for everyone who wants to have a happy relationship.

Themed Pre-wedding shoot in Ladakh by WeddingNama

Themed Pre-wedding shoot in Ladakh by WeddingNama

Jul 29, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

Wedding photographers Ankita and Akash of WeddingNama shot at nearly 10,000 ft above sea level for a unique pre-wedding shoot in Ladakh. They tell us about it here.

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

“At WeddingNama, we focus a lot on creating personalized expressions in photographs and film. We’re known as trendsetters and this reputation comes from presenting ideas that have not been done before. In today’s internet-of-everything world, people are content with picking up references and replicating them. But we’d rather work to create unique, original concepts like last year, when we shot a proposal/save-the-date video entirely underwater.

As we chatted with this couple, we realised they wanted elegance and class and so we came up with ‘Talaash’, as a concept. We would need stunning backdrops to tell the story perfectly and that is how we decided to shoot in Ladakh.

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

The entire Ladakh experience was quite amazing. First off, you need to take your time. The flight lands early in the morning and most hotels in Ladakh provide early check-ins. From the minute you land you are constantly reminded to not plan any activity on the same day, giving yourself time to acclimatize to the high altitudes. Once you’re ready to shoot, you must budget to travel four or five hours from Leh to where the locations are. The roads can be quite tricky and sometimes there are no roads at all! We had to plan meticulously over the 4/5 days we’d allotted for the shoot plus travel.

115

115

There were climactic challenges. Chilly winds meant it was impossible to shoot at night. Then with extreme cloud cover, we spent a lot of time literally chasing sunlight. The long hours travelling down bumpy roads took their toll on our backs! Then of course the ever present bogey of altitude sickness; travelling so high up in such a short time meant that at one point or the other, someone from the team or the couple was sick. You can’t tell in the shots, but there were times when the bridegroom or the person shooting were shivering like crazy but just steeled themselves for the shot!

But look at the stunning landscapes of Ladakh and all the pain is forgotten! We had such a blast. It is literally heaven on earth. Everywhere we turned our cameras, there was a beautiful frame waiting to be captured.

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

On our return, we really enjoyed editing the film. At some level, this is the story of a boy who meets a girl and falls in love, but we’ve tried to turn the narrative and create something different. This is a story as much of finding love as of love finding you; a ‘Talaash’ at a divine level. We had an original soundtrack composed and recorded especially for this film. Looking back, you realize everyone worked so hard. We now have memories of this wonderful journey and when we saw the reaction of the couple and their families at the screening it was all worth it!”

WeddingNama

WeddingNama

Tips from WeddingNama: Every location in Ladakh is picturesque. Keep your eye out for the offbeat along the way to avoid the tourist crowds in places like Pangong, Tso Moriri and Nubra Valley at sunset. Ladakhi sunsets are stunning so try and find a place where you can avoid the tourists and focus on the dramatic shadows on the mountains and changing colours of the lakes. Look at weather forecasts before you plan. Ladakh is a very peaceful place, so please be respectful.

Bengali Wedding : Minimalism and Warmth

Bengali Wedding : Minimalism and Warmth

Jul 29, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

“Whilst growing up in the lanes of Darjeeling and Shillong, I never dreamed that one day I’d be scripting the celebration of love…” Arnab Moitra muses. Director and Editor of Piyali and Rangeen’s Wedding Film, Arnab is a cinematographer and founder of “ChickenSnake Films”. Here, he tells WeddingSutra about how he envisioned and then executed this, one of his most experimental and perhaps best wedding film, in February 2016.

“Piyali and Rangeen bumped into each other for the first time in London as they boarded their respective flights to the US. They were actually going to the same university – but they caught just a glimpse of each other.” The couple had zero contact for two years but fate had other plans. Auspiciously, they met during Durga Puja celebrations in the US. “They both declare each the other’s best friend! And they cultivated this friendship over time and then decided to get hitched.”

Arnab says the inspiration for the film comes from knowing the both Piyali and Rangeen are from very ethnic and elegant Bengali families from Kolkata and Medinipur respectively, “Their families are epitomes of the elegant Bengali attributes.” And so, Arnab decided to bring the flavours of the Bengali lifestyle into the film – including typical quirks and tangents like the adda, poetry, family in-jokes, Tagore – everything that moves a typical Bengali heart and celebrating the freedom of the Bengali family environment.

The film deliberately eschews the typical modern age desperate rush, the standard, cliché ‘Bollywood look’ wedding filmmakers like to brush on to any wedding they cover, no matter what the genre or uniqueness of the people and the ceremonies.

Instead, Arnab decided to work with reality and the magic of the non-airbrushed everyday. To the viewer it comes across as fresh and original and therefore more entertaining. Riding a bike through the neighbourhood, the bride holding up her mehendi-ed hands, Piyali’s younger sister Prama, dancing on the terrace, embracing the sunset behind her… the film captures it all. Every community has its unique ‘aroma’ and if the filmmaker works at portraying it simply and subtly, focusing on the content, you get a film like this one.

Arnab admits that this is one of his favourite films of all that he has made. “The experiment to highlight the true Bengali flavor has worked!” Encouraged by his success, he plans to explore this genre further, trying to contribute his unique voice to the growing wedding film industry in India and overseas.

The filmmakers are still very cognizant of the fact that no matter how talented and dedicated they may be, finally, the best wedding films always rely on the flexibility and space provided for by their clients. “We were enormously supported by Piyali di and the families! You can tell by her wedding film which is a truly original one”, says Ashika Rai, Creative director of ChickenSnake Films.

Here’s to more experimentation and finding the real ‘flavour’ of every wedding as ChickenSnake begins to plot their next films for the coming wedding season!

WeddingSutra Engage at Hyderabad- the new hotspot for Destination Weddings

WeddingSutra Engage at Hyderabad- the new hotspot for Destination Weddings

Jul 23, 2016Taj Hotels Resorts Palaces, The Wedding Makers, Wedding Planning, WeddingSutra Masterclass and WS Engage

The city of Hyderabad is an increasingly popular choice for destination weddings by families from all over the world. The Taj Group of Hotels hosted WeddingSutra Engage, the elegant luxury and weddings’ event. Their Hyderabad properties, Taj Krishna, Taj Falaknuma Palace and Taj Deccan are the epitome of Hyderabadi culture and hospitality and are adept at hosting destination weddings of all hues.

The theme was ‘Hyderabad- the new hotspot for Destination Weddings’ and as always, the event was a hub of the city’s prominent wedding industry folk, top bridal fashion influencers, creative entrepreneurs and some very special guests – ten WeddingSutra readers and brides-to-be, who participated and won an invitation to this soirée.

The panel discussion included the city’s finest creative minds and entrepreneurs and Mumbai’s eminent wedding planners. The rapt audience had the chance to listen to Shalini Bhupal- Executive Director Taj GVK Hotels, Anushree Reddy- Bridal Couturier, Dinaz Noria- Event Stylist, K Mohanchandran, Director- Operations Taj GVK Hotels and General Manager- Taj Krishna and Kainaz Sethna the Head of Mumbai-based Seven Steps (a division of Seventy Event Media Group). The panel discussion was moderated by Parthip Thyagarajan, Director, WeddingSutra.

There was consensus that Hyderabad, already the country’s MICE (Meetings Incentives Conferences Exhibitions) capital is evolving as a hotspot for social events. The reasons are evident. Hyderabad has a longstanding reputation for its cultural charm, heritage and cuisine. The last being especially important to guests at a wedding. It scores on the cost factor, maintaining a price advantage through the year. And of course, the sheer beauty of the Taj’s iconic Falaknuma Palace, Taj Krishna and Taj Deccan and the confident teams whose perfect training and vast experience at managing weddings, and impeccable service assure clients that their wedding is in trusted hands.

Shalini Bhupal, Executive Director, Taj GVK Hotels emphasized Hyderabad’s happy blend of influences, “Apart from the summer, Hyderabad has very pleasant weather all year. The climate is temperate which is a huge advantage to those who want an outdoor wedding.” Hyderabad’s rich history is another lure, she says, “Culturally, there is a mix of the Nizams, who were in turn influenced by the styles of the West; the native Andhra and Telangana culture,” and this of course is best experienced in the cuisine, “the Hyderabadi biryani and spicy Andhra food!” and fashion, “We have some brilliant designers! So you can come here to get married at one of our venues, eat our food, wear our clothes and we will give you a fabulous wedding.”

shilpa

shilpa

Dinaz Noria, the city’s best known event stylist is familiar with every great location Hyderabad has to offer. She described a picture book worthy collection of palaces, forts and temples suitable for destination weddings, “This city offers destinations of all kinds. If you’re looking for some Telugu culture, in addition to the forts and temples, there are resorts and luxury hotels.” The cherry on top? Getting around Hyderabad is easy, so there’s no precious time wasted in commuting.

Hyderabad’s potential as a destination wedding option really revealed itself with the Taj Falaknuma Palace, Kainaz Sethna of Seven Steps said, “All these years one didn’t realise how much one can do with a venue like Hyderabad. The Falaknuma Palace presents a very viable option to Rajasthan. It is a dream wedding venue.” But in addition to the well-known places, she said there were many other venues being discovered and shared “thanks to WeddingSutra Engage where we connected and interacted with the city’s top wedding and creative professionals.”

Between the Taj Krishna and the Taj Deccan, close by, K Mohanchandran, the General Manager, Taj Krishna told the audience that guests have access to “Over 400 rooms, 15 acres of space, and several banquet facilities on offer, not to forget the various halls for wedding related functions.” Mohanchandran cited easy connectivity to most Indian cities and overseas, mentioning Hyderabad’s award winning airport. Echoing a theme at the event, he reiterated, “that pricing across segments was not exorbitant – whether it is the rooms, the food, or the transport. All of which make Hyderabad one of the best locations for a destination wedding in India.”

mohanchandran

After the panel discussion, it was time for Anushree Reddy, bridal couturier, to bring her experience to the audience that included ten very excited brides-to-be. Her latest collection is called ‘Wedding Chronicles” and the designer tipped her hat to the modern bride who she acknowledges as very aware of current trends in fashion, know what colours work with them and what styles they’re looking for. She explained that in her line of work, she often creates for the bride’s sister, mum and friends as well, “so that there is synergy in what they are wearing, I try and give them a complete look right down to the shoes. I guide them to go with styles that are not repetitive and design according to the occasion. For example, I make garments mehendi and sangeet friendly if those are the functions I am designing for.” As a nod to the traditions of Hyderabad, Anushree said she used zardozi in her creations, “so there is a local feel to the garments.”

Then it was time to turn to the buffet table. Nitin Mathur, Executive Chef of Taj Krishna, Nitin Mathur, tracked popular wedding menu trends, “While people are increasingly health conscious and the salad bars are getting longer, there is also a great demand for large dessert counters. People want everything – from cupcakes to glass towers and macaroons and wedding cakes. Live counters and single ingredient tasting counters are also increasingly popular, along with multiple cuisines being represented at the wedding buffet.”

Finally, Jamie Walker, brand ambassador for Diageo introduced the importance of a good bar. He had a few basic tips, “Always make sure you have enough alcohol so you don’t run out!” but stressed the importance in hiring a great bartender, “You need a bartender who is polite, well versed with mixology, and can rustle up some interesting cocktails and mocktails. He should also be responsible and not serve more alcohol to someone who has probably had enough. A good bar will have people enjoying themselves and if they drink responsibly there are no embarrassing moments for the hosts.”

Love Actually- Mitali Sanghi and Tarun Reddy’s Day of Love

Love Actually- Mitali Sanghi and Tarun Reddy’s Day of Love

Jul 22, 2016Love Actually

Mitali has known her fiancé Tarun for over a decade. They met through a common friend but as part of the same gang, there was never any romantic involvement. She says, “We were both studying, then working and about five years ago, we just randomly connected on Facebook. We met on our own and started going out. A month later, we were in love. In a couple of years, he asked me to marry him and we informed our parents. We got engaged in January 2015 and though we decided to have our wedding late last year, we postponed it to August 14th this year.”

_X2A3432

Mitali quit the corporate world to become a make-up artist and Tarun, a qualified commercial pilot, decided to join his family business and is currently the co owner of Ten Downing Street, a popular chain of pubs and nightspots in the country.

Mitali tells us more about their day of love: “I knew I was in love with him within a month of dating. I was waiting for him to say something, but he never did. So when he threw a party for me on my birthday, I couldn’t wait any longer, so I just came right out and told him that I loved him. He reciprocated and we made it official.”

_X2A3311

_X2A3402

_X2A3497

Like many brides and grooms who plan their own wedding Mitali and Tarun have not hired a wedding planner. “We are very clear with about what we want and our mothers have designed and are executing every minute detail. They’re enjoying the experience of making checklists and timelines. We’re also very clear about wanting a celebration that is a mix of tradition and fun.” The couple decided not to be wasteful too, “With the décor, we are combining real flowers with paper flowers too – why spend so much on flowers that wilt away the next day? People say wedding planning can be stressful, but not for us. We are busy with work and make time between work and over weekends to plan it all with our families.”

page 3

_X2A3317

_X2A3366

At WeddingSutra Engage, the wedding inspiration event co-hosted by WeddingSutra and Taj Krishna the bride-to-be said she loved the wedding elements all around, particularly the Canvera photo-books that beautifully preserve precious wedding memories. As an extra treat, Mitali, a bridal make-up artist herself loved the fact that, “I got to meet and network with so many people from the wedding industry- from event stylists and photographers to bar specialists like Jamie Walker, the Brand Ambassador of Diageo”.

The next day amidst the sylvan surroundings of the majestic Taj Krishna Hotel, Mitali and Tarun shyly posed for pictures. Mitali reveals that she and her fiancé are extremely camera shy and wouldn’t indulge in PDA or even hold hands when they are outside. She says, “The shoot was lovely and the WeddingSutra team went out of their way to put us at ease. Tarun and I were still very conscious and we could barely look into each other’s eyes. Later in fact, he was teasing me saying ‘I have never looked into your eyes for this long. You have a mark here and a pimple there’. The photo shoot at the outdoor spaces and pool side of Taj Krishna, one of our favourite hotels in the city was a great experience and I think WeddingSutra got some really nice pictures of us.”

page 1

_X2A3320

_X2A3395

Mitali smiles and says there were never any challenges or hiccups in their relationship, “We are really comfortable with each other, best friends. We’ve both had a liberal upbringing, so the fact that we are from different communities (he is a Reddy and I am a Marwari) doesn’t make a difference to us or our dear families.”

_X2A3259

As they hold hands tightly (a step up from their shyness), just one month before their big day, the excitement is evident! The shoot may have brought this gorgeous couple out of their shell as they smile feeling less self-conscious, happy they’ve made friends with the lens in time for being photographed on their wedding day.

Behind The Frame

Behind The Frame

Jul 15, 2016Wedding Photography & Films

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then thank your photographer for working all the random elements that leave a viewer speechless!

The wedding photographer’s job gives the illusion of being a simple one – so simple, every high-end camera owner believes they could pull it off – young love, a moment, an awe-inspiring image. A back-handed compliment to a skilled photographer – a frame so perfect, so natural, you think anyone could have done it.

But shutterbugs like Anand Rathi know what it takes – struggle, determination, improvisation and patience! When Dhaval and Shivani, a twenty-something Mumbai-based couple, came to his company, Reels and Frames, with their dreams of an international pre-wedding shoot, he began the process. Over a span of nine months they explored locations around the world – London, Paris, Turkey – only for each plan to crash into a last-minute dead-end. Disheartened, the team took a sabbatical.

As it turned out, this project would only see the light of day two months after Dhaval and Shivani’s Amby Valley wedding. But, it would happen in mystical, romantic Venice!

Venice wasn’t their first choice, but Anand had been to Cinque Terre, a picturesque cluster of five villages on the Costa Ligure of Levante, a UNESCO protected heritage site. He knew the colours, contours of the location would lend themselves beautifully to the Bollywood-homage he’d planned for the shoot. The team then spent weeks in pre-production planning every single thing down to the last detail – including the couple’s wardrobe.

They set off, looking for sunshine glinting off the waters and blue skies. As they touched down at Marco Polo airport, they were greeted by a thunderstorm. The clever, intrepid travellers decided to improvise and made room in their story board for dramatic thunder clouds and sparkling rain. Guided by the forces of good (and the reliable Google Earth) they set out on their mission – to make images that would last a lifetime.

It helped that the couple was enthusiastic and willingly woke up early to be on location at 6 am to beat the tourist hordes, hiked up 22,000 steps or walked as many as 8 kilometres a day for the perfect shot. And the perfect shot they got – time after time, Anand and Sumit’s perseverance and instinct and skill are tangible in the gorgeous results!

1. Kissing on the Grand CanalOur first stop was Manarola, a four-hour drive out of Venice. This is a 150 megapixel composite stitched image, which you can blow up to an XXXL billboard with no loss of resolution. Look at the way the image is lit; it’s dark with beautiful light on them. We managed this by taking extra shots while the last rays of sun were going down. Then we stitched the images together in post. The bride’s outfit is designed by Veda Raheja.

2. Posing at Saint Marks SquareWe picked a photo holiday to shoot on, so you’ll see that there are no tourists around. We wanted a glamourous, evening look and they were all decked up at 6 am. She’s wearing a red gown by Kashveen Kohli.

3. The Bridge of SighsThere were hundreds of tourists so we decided to pretend we were on a film shoot. The couple checked their make up in the mirror as we tried to create a little space for our shots. When some Chinese tourists asked if they were Indian film actors, the bride played cooked up a really convincing story and said we were shooting for a South Indian film! It worked!

4. Singing in the Rain This is at Monterosso al Mare, two stations away from Manarola. We’d initially planned a sunset shoot, but there were thunderstorms as we got off the train. Dhaval and Shivani had an umbrella at hand, there was a tunnel behind them and we just took these shots at the station itself. They’re magical!

5. Up, Up and Away! This aerial shot was taken at Vernazza, one of the five villages in The Cinqe Terre. There is a visual contrast – a very European backdrop to a very ethic couple. (The saree is designed by Kashveen Kohli.) There are no hotels here so we woke up at 5 am for the 6 am train and hiked uphill for an hour to get to this location. The couple are standing inches away from a few hundred foot drop to the ocean!

6. Romance in Venice On the last day, just before the couple was leaving for the airport, we scurried around and took three shots in a gondola. We skipped a couple of lines, took all the shortcuts we could and shot till half an hour before they had to be at the airport.
